On A Personal Note: A Memorial Day Birthday

IMG_7446-2

Yesterday was boyfriend’s 25th birthday. We spent the day walking around his favorite parts of the city, eating his favorite food and enjoying the amazingly gorgeous weather we experienced in San Francisco. Saturday we took a few friends and drove out to Napa, did some wine tasting and walked around the adorable downtown area. To say the least, it was a perfect weekend. We feel so fortunate to have been able to be together on such an important birthday, and for our wonderful, healthy, joy filled lives.

Obsessed with that cheese-fest face. The cutest fake smile award goes to this man.

The Ultra High-Rise Skinny Jean (In other words, perfection)

Well, it’s happened. I’ve ventured into the territory of the ultra high-rise jean, and i’m loving it. I don’t really know why I never thought to purchase this style before but I couldn’t be happier with the fit, the way they feel, and the versatility of this pair. I have already worn them 3-4 times since purchasing them a few days ago and love that I can wear them with virtually any top tucked in, or a looser fitting style draped over for extra tummy support.

I was originally a little hesitant about the wash of these but think that the subtle fading makes them appropriate for day or night and adds a bit of relaxation to the outfit. The rise on these jeans comes to above 1 inch above my natural belly button which is perfection for sitting with comfort and complete tummy control. The pockets are placed just a smidge higher than I normally go but I think they give a nice lift and are proportioned for this overall style.

Perhaps the most interesting part of this pair is the quality. I went out on a limb and purchased my second pair of designer denim (these are J Brand) and am seriously smitten with the wearability. Designer denim really does allow for a more comfortable fit and better tailor to the body, and these do just that. I feel like these are a second skin in the best way possible and may have just become a J Brand convert. For reference, i’m wearing a size 31 and love them. I could probably have gotten away with a 30 and then stretched them out a bit but the 31 for the time being is just perfection.

How To: Achieve the Most Flattering Jean Cuff

IMG_7352-2

JBrand high-waist skinny jeans, Pour La Victoire wedges

My recent discovery of the flattering nature of pegged jeans has been well documented these last few months. There is something about rolling up an already tight, skinny jean that makes me feel Summery, yet put together. I have found, though, that rolling jeans in any way does not give the same streamlined look to the leg, but rather following a simple formula always provides a flattering effect.

IMG_7336-2 IMG_7338-2

Step 1: Start with very skinny, tapered jeans. The skinnier the better. Be sure they are approximately the right length for you or you will end up with a ton of bunchy fabric

Step 2: Roll up the base of the jean to the point where your calf begins to get wide. You should struggle to pull the cuff up any further as your calf is too wide.

Step 3: Fold over the lower half of the folded jean leg, as shown. This should decrease the amount of fold by one half.

Step 4: The result should be an about 1.5-2 inch double fold about 3-4 inches above the base of your ankle

Step 5: I like the “messier” cuff look. If you prefer a cleaner line (which I personally don’t think is as flattering or chic), stop above. For a messier look, scrunch half of the folded area up a bit, pull the end of the jean out of the fold to expose it. This creates an effortless vibe. Repeat on the other leg.

Voila! The result is a not-so-perfect, perfect cuff. Examples of a full outfit with this look can be found here and here.

I find that the messier cuff creates a more streamlined leg, rather than a “prettier” cuff that creates just a solid stripe of different colored fabric hovering around the ankle.  Let me know if you give this a try! How do you cuff your jeans?

The Best Peplum for Spring

IMG_7270-2

Ted Baker peplum top, Banana Republic Skinny jeans, DSW wedges, Alexis Bittar earrings

Admittedly, I have purchased many a peplum top (here and here) in the hopes of finding one that fit. In theory, they are the perfect piece for pearshapes: they nip in at the waist creating definition, graze over the tummy and over the hips, and add to our already hourglass figure. However, when done improperly they end up making us look pregnant or disproportioned. Common issues include: peplums that hit just below the chest creating a dowdy appearance, too short at the bottom resulting in mis-proportion. This floral stunner from Ted Baker not only reaffirms my love for the brand, but my belief in the power of a well fitting peplum.

IMG_7299-2

This particular top has crapped sleeves for a bit of extra coverage, and is made of a layered silk material for amazing drape. It is double layered so it is not see-through and has the most stunning floral print, perfect for warmer or cooler months.

IMG_7281-2

It has a front slit (perfect for a larger chest), and seams that run straight down the front and back creating added definition. Finally, and most importantly, the peplum begins 2 inches below my bust, and hits a few inches above the largest/widest part of my hips. This allows my chest room to breathe and definition to be created between the bottom of my bust and the small of my waist. The length doesn’t accentuate my hips but grazes over the smallest part, adding width only where I want it.

Color me obsessed. Have you found a great fitting peplum? Do share!
