Transforming an Old Dress: Layering a Shirt

Recently i’ve been trying really hard to rework items in my closet from past seasons, or wear them in new ways. Last week I talked about a beloved knit vest from Zara that I have since worn as a scarf and as a layering piece during cooler evenings this Spring. One of the items that is the easiest to rework is the dress. This particular one is a skater skirt and the nipped waist lends it beautifully to layering.

I absolutely love the look of oxblood and white together and found it oddly appropriate for Spring when worn with casual flats and nude sunglasses. Paired with a hot pink lip and loose waves, it was the perfect outfit for dinner and drinks with friends.

One of the things I did to keep it more casual and not stuffy, was tie the end of the shirt and leave it somewhat messy rather than adding a belt or hiding the looseness. This made the outfit feel more effortless and gave me the easy option of removing the outer layer if I got too warm. I could easily see doing this with a slouchy printed t-shirt or sweater for an even more casual-chic look.

Fit & Flare Made Casual by Jessica Simpson

IMG_7693-2

Prada sunglasses, Jessica Simpson dress, Superga sneakers, Nars lip pencil

A few things: 1) I’m obsessed with this dress. 2) Can we talk about how my legs blend in with my shoes… and the concrete? Someone needs a tan! 3) Sneaks and tennis shoes are the best.

I think I was originally inspired to wear sneakers with flirty dresses from Maegan. This is something she does often and I just love the contrast of casual and sophisticated. My recommendation when doing this would be to wear a dress with a more casual material (read: cotton) but a flirty shape (read: not pencil skirt).

This particular dress is amazing. The shoulders are padded balancing the hips, and the skirt is a full skater but is still long enough to be comfortable. The v-neck is so flattering and the paneled seaming is superb. My only recommendation with this one: don’t eat a huge meal beforehand. My little bump is the result of some yummy home made Chinese!

More lovin’ in the woods: 3 year anniversary shoot, continued

COUPLE_8

These are the last of the three year anniversary pictures shot by Lydia Hudgens, and are perhaps my favorite in the bunch. This top one is such a great posed picture of us and the lighting is just phenom.

As a reminder, my dress is James Perse (reviewed here), heels from Nordstrom, Alexis Bittar earrings and J.Crew bracelet

3 Year Dating Anniversary Photos + James Perse LBD Review

test

^^That face! It melts my heart

Get ready for a picture heavy post! A few weeks ago boyfriend and I met with the amazingly talented Lydia Hudgens to shoot some photos. If you can believe it, he and I have never had professional pictures done in the 3+ years we have known each other. He detests being in front of the camera and is always busy shooting photos for ThePearShape! I absolutely love how these turned out and how comfortable Lydia helped him feel.

COUPLE_9

My favorite part about these particular pictures is that they catch us in our natural state. They aren’t too posed or contrived, but show us touching and laughing and kissing, much how we are on a regular day.

COUPLE_12

We opted for neutral color pallets to keep the emphasis on us. Boyfriend is wearing J.Crew jeans, Burberry watch, and a Banana Republic shirt.

COUPLE_1

I opted for my new favorite LBD: the James Perse ruched v-neck dress¬†and an old pair of snakeskin heels found at Nordstrom. Accentuated with YSL lipstick and Alexis Bittar earrings gifted by boyfriend for my birthday. I didn’t want to wear Spanx or control anything in these photos, but really reflect how we naturally look. This dress did an amazing job of hiding my imperfections (read: arms and thighs) and accentuating my curves. I couldn’t have felt more comfortable.

Thank you so much to Lydia for the amazing photos and stay tuned for the second half of the set coming at you tomorrow!
