Review: The perfect holiday dress for pearshapes, from Asos

Asos dress, Gap belt (similar), H&M necklace (similar holiday option), Urban Outfitters clutch (similar), SPANX tights, Cole Haan pumps

I have never felt prettier, or more comfortable than in this dress. It goes against most rules I have always had for my body type, but feels so right when on. It has a puffy A-line shape, pleating, and came with tulle attached inside to give it extra puff on the hip area. Normally I go with sleek, body hugging styles, but there is something about a looser bottom that allows breathability and mobility. After a few minor alterations and adding some simple accessories, this is my official Holiday dress for this year!

Originally the dress looked like it did above (minus the bow belt). It came with 3 layers of tulle crudely sewn on each hip area making the dress dramatically puffy. When I tried it on my boyfriend immediately said I looked like a cupcake (and not in a good way). I chose to take out the tulle and absolutely love the shape now. There is still a subtle poof to give it that skater dress shape, but not so much to exaggerate my hips.

I added simple accessories like this waist synching bow belt from gap and large bauble from H&M to draw emphasis upward and to my smallest point. Clean black tights and pumps elongate my legs for an even sleeker look. Though, i’m thinking of purchasing a pair of polka dot tights to add some more fun to this already feminine, exciting outfit.

This weekend my boyfriend and I will be traveling to Reno, NV and San Francisco, CA to see some of his family for the holidays. On the agenda is the annual Nevada “Santa Crawl” which we participate in every year. I can’t wait to sport this perfectly girly and festive frock for the occasion.

One dress, two seasons

Dress: Madewell (this season’s)

Left// LOFT sweater (similar), vintage necklace, J.Crew boots, SPANX tights Right// J.Crew flats

I am all about purchasing items that have staying power through multiple seasons. This Madewell dress was one of the few garments I have purchased at full retail price and was definitely hesitant about it at the time. However, it has proved to be one of my most comfortable clothing pieces, and I have found countless ways to style it from Spring to Fall and Winter.

I particularly love that it is collared which allows for some fun pattern mixing, and that the material is thin enough to be layered with just a light sweater. The black and white polka dot lends itself to pairings with almost any color; from vibrant blues to neutrals like silver and gold.

In other news, i’m really getting into blow drying out my hair to give it this swooping, voluminous effect. I have been trying out countless haircare products and am thinking about doing a post about it soon. Stay tuned!

Layering for Winter + Reviewing My Favorite SPANX Shapewear

H&M Dress (old, loving this one), Vince Camuto Blouse (similar), SPANX Tights, Steve Madden Boots, Ann Taylor Bracelet (similar)

With the weather dropping in Charlotte I am doing my best to layer without the bulk. This is one of my favorite H&M finds from many years ago and I wasn’t quite ready to give up it’s flirty shape and fun button detailing for Winter. On another note, i’m the biggest fan of these tights from SPANX and always buy 2-3 pairs for the colder months. They are just opaque enough to provide the kind of coverage I need and have body shaping technology that removes the need for other shapewear when wearing a tighter-fitting dress.

Frankenstorm Style + Finally Found: Wide-Calf Hunter Boots

Dress: NY&C (old, similar), Scarf: Asos (old, similar), Belt: Nordstrom (similar), Boots: Hunter Huntress

Between Frankenstorm terrorizing North Carolina (thanks Mother Nature for that one), and our work schedules, the boyfriend and I are spending the week (and last weekend) apart. Which for us fashion bloggers means rain-centered outfits and indoor remote controlled photos. Allow me to apologize in advance for the awkward faces and strange locations. After an unfortunate incident that involved my camera crashing to the floor on a tripod, I haven’t quite braved taking self portraits outside just yet. In other news, i’m in love with Hunter boots and want to wear them every. single. day.

I have really, really wide calves. We are talking 17inch circumference here. So Hunter’s standard boots didn’t fit me, much like every other tall boot. After a bit of searching and digging, I found that Hunter does indeed make a boot for us wide-calved ladies: the Hunter Huntress! With an 18inch calf circumference and ever so slightly shorter shaft height, these boots are absolute perfection. While they don’t come in every crazy color that the standard ones do, I was perfectly happy with my Hunter green, admittedly inspired by the so-stylish mama of The Daybook.

P.S. Behold my new headshot below (jokes). I might not be able to take a decent outfit picture of myself but by gosh can I take a face shot.
