“The” Dress

Dress: Anthropologie (similar), Shoes: Sam Edelman, Earings: Mom’s

Have you ever had a dress that when you put it on you instantly feel fabulous? This is that dress for me. The crisscross fabric, the tight fit, the sleeves and the shape make me feel like a million bucks when I put this on. Coupled with sky-high metallic heels and a messy hairdo, it’s always a winner in my book for a fun night out.

Do you have a dress that always makes you feel great?

Shopping Post: JCrew Fit Problems

Postage Stamp Mini in Big Apple, wearing a size 10. On sale for $79.99, with 30% off = $56

Verdict: Pass

There are a lot of sales going on right now in stores so I decided to pop into JCrew on a recent shopping trip. I am starting my first full-time job after college in just about a month and need some business-casual work clothes. JCrew had a ton of skirts and dresses on sale and so also I tried a few things on for an up and coming trip to Cabo San Lucas. The store was also doing an additional 30% off sale items, and as a student I get an additional 15% off, so I had to pop in.

One of the things that always frustrates me about JCrew is their inconsistent sizing. As a person who loves to shop online, this really bugs me. This was totally the case when I shopped in stores and just discourages me to continue buying. In all of the skirts I tried on I was wearing a size 10, my usual size at JCrew, and they were extremely tight and created that dreaded “S” shape on the front of my body (tight on the stomach, indents in the crotch area, bulges at the hips).

Classic Mini in cotton, size 10. On sale for $79.99, with 30% off = $56

I’m glad I tried this on in the store. I have almost ordered this exact skirt countless times but never pulled the trigger for fear that it was too short, and i’m glad I waited. It was much too short for work, incredibly tight, and not lined like most JCrew skirts.

Verdict: Pass

Drawstring mini, size 10. On sale for $49.99, with 30% off = $35

I thought this skirt would be a cute summer weekend staple but the fit was so terrible. It was super wide in the hips (probably due to the slight pleating) and made me look hippier than I am. The drawstring at the front also created unnecessary volume.

Verdict: Pass

Striped Button Front Dress, size M. On sale for $34.99, with 30% = $24.50

I had high hopes for this dress as a beach coverup for my Mexican vacation. Its a heavy-weight cotton but loose and breezy enough for summer weather. But as you can see, it was way too big, it could be a maternity dress. It was also much longer than I usually like to go for beach coverups.

Verdict: Pass

Maritime Dress in Skinny Stripe, size M. On Sale for $59.99, with 30% off = $42

I’m so glad I found this dress in stores! I have seen it on countless other bloggers and wondered how it would look on a curvier figure. It is a sheath style which typically is difficult to fit for pearshaped gals, but in this instance I felt it worked. The stripes were more flattering and in the heavy-weight cotton, it will do perfectly as a beach cover-up. I also loved the zipper details on the sides and am excited to pair it with gold jewelry and my new JCrew flats.

Verdict: Purchased

The last thing I purchased was this simple t-shirt in anchor print. It was SO adorable in the store that I was willing to splurge on the $39 price tag. I can see wearing this a ton on the weekends with colorful accessories.

During this trip I also got an amazing work bag that I will be sharing in later posts. Finding a stylish work bag that is durable and can carry multiple laptops, papers, etc., is tough. This was a great find!

Mint Green – Vacation Style

Top + Skirt: H&M (recent), Sandals: Dolce Vita via Zappos, Necklace: Anthropologie

A few weeks back I went on a wonderful Jamaican vacation with three of my closest girl friends from college. We stayed at the Riu Palace in Negril and absolutely loved sitting by the beach, sipping drinks, and eating buffet lunches and dinners for five glorious days. It was the best way to relax at the beginning of summer. For dinners we wanted to dress up from our standard bikini wear throughout the day, and so I packed a lot of light, breezy layers.

This black skirt from H&M was one of their “fantastic finds” at $4.99 and has gotten so much wear out of my closet. It is a thicker knit with a more modest length and elasticated waist. I practically lived in this skirt in Jamaica and it has lasted me two full summers now. The downside of the skirt is that because it is a stretchy knit it clings to almost everything, and the elastic at the top also tends to dig into my sides just a tad. To fix this issue I typically pair this skirt with flowy tops that hide the pinching at the top and make the outfit more modest.

This H&M top was also an amazing find. At $17.99 it satisfied my need for mint in my wardrobe and the near-sheer back gives it a fun twist. My only complaint about this top is that there is a bit of gaping at the chest (always an issue for me), and the buttons have some loose threading. But at that price you get what you pay for.

I dressed up the outfit with this fun piece from Anthropologie. It was a bit of a splurge for me but has gotten a ton of wear. The colors are fun and vibrant and Anthro jewelry is always made really well, so I know it will be a piece that lasts.

Readers – what do you pack to wear on summer beach vacations?
