Review: 7FAM “Kimmie” Curvy Bootcut Denim

7 For All Mankind jeans, Madewell top (in another color), Target belt, Nordstrom flats (similar), Scarf from Italy, Chanel WOC

I am perpetually on the hunt for the perfect jean. I have tried almost all low end varieties from Ann Taylor to LOFT to Levi’s, and have never been 100% happy. I decided to venture into the higher end territory as I have literally never owned a pair of jeans over $70. A new denim world! I started at 7FAM because I had heard of their “curvy” line and actually, am very pleased with the way they fit.

The jeans are a standard 98% cotton, 2% spandex but don’t seem to lose their shape with multiple wears. I took these on a recent work trip for 2 weeks, never washed them and wore them often and saw no signs of stretching.

Regarding fit: I find that while the waistband sits flat along my stomach and back, I always wear a belt because it doesn’t seem to fit snuggly enough for my liking. I love the way they fit around my hips and thighs, tight but not sausage looking. I also am a fan of the slightly higher rise. These come about 1-1.5 inches below my belly button which I think is ideal for a non-highrise jean.

The pocket placement of these jeans is also ideal for me. About 1.5-2 inches separation from the middle seam is where I like my pockets to lay for my butt to look its best. I also appreciate the subtle fading along the front seaming and rear. It is enough to show some interest but not enough to draw attention to problem areas.

Overall, i’m a fan. Would I pay the over $200 price tag for all of my jeans? Probably not. While I enjoy these and have gotten a ton of wear out of them, the price tag still gets me. I am just as happy with my Levi’s Supreme Curve jeans.

Light Colored Denim (Review: Banana Republic Skinny Ankle Jean)

IMG_6094

Banana Republic Skinny Ankle Jean (wearing a size 30), Anthropologie top, LV Speedy 30 bag, Havainas Sandals

Since we decided a few weeks ago that my boyfriend jeans needed to be retired, I have been craving a light colored pair of jeans for Spring/Summer. Encouraged by the cuffed jeans experience I had with another Banana Republic pair, I scooped these jeans up in a hurry during a recent 40% off sale. Without even trying them on, I figured that with the added stretch, high rise and tapered leg, it couldn’t be so bad. Wrong. I, of course, hastily ripped off the tag after putting these babies on without proper analysis and totally regret it.

IMG_6119

For starters: these jeans do weird things to my knees. Maybe it’s that they show through the fabric too much? Have weird fading in that area? I don’t know but I reaaaally don’t like it especially after seeing these photos.

Second thing I hate is that the leg isn’t tapered enough. It is sort of half wide half skinny and is difficult to cuff.

Finally, these jeans have way to much stretch to be flattering. Normally i’m a fan of a good amount of stretch especially on the bottom half for us pears, but these pants felt like leggings and I felt like I was jiggling down the street all day.

Needless to say, these are a “to donate” item. Man, what a waste. Have any of you tried on any BR skinny jeans you like? Please do share!

Newest Make-up Additions

IMG_6455I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter weekend (to those who celebrate). I spent the majority of the weekend alone, shopping and just relaxing while the boyfriend drove all of our belongings across the country. Since my last everyday makeup post I have felt like my makeup materials were getting stale and old. Brushes were breaking, blush was cracking, and I felt like I just needed an overall reset. I popped into my local Sephora to grab a few new brushes and of course walked out with a handful of items.

IMG_6472One of the first things I knew I needed was blush. My Sephora brand blush that I talked about in a previous make up post actually broke in half so I wanted to pop in and get one that not only was a gorgeous shade, but that had packaging that would allow it to last a while. Every beauty guru knows about Nars’ “orgasm” blush, so I picked it up to try. I love the subtle shimmer and big mirror that comes with the compact.

IMG_6493Along with my blush breaking, my blush brush that I’d had literally since middle school also finally called it quits. I happen to love big kabuki-like brushes for blush so I nabbed this Sephora brand mineral powder brush. It is number 45 and is so soft, i’m in love.

IMG_6496With that, i’ve been wanting a new foundation brush. I have bought and thrown away countless foundation brushes as they either leave the makeup too streaky, or the bristles break off. A Youtube beauty guru that I love, Carli Bybel uses this Mac 188 brush for foundation so I decided to pick it up. The bristles are long and separated so I think it will get into the crevices nicely.

IMG_6501Here is a picture of the density of the brushes. As you can see, the lower one is the foundation brush and is much more sparse and narrow, great for getting into fine lines. The blush brush is wider and denser and will allow for a more general application.

IMG_6485After those essentials, I decided I wanted to take the leap and try out a brow kit. I have never, ever put anything on my brows but everyone talks about it like its magic so I wanted to test it out. I wandered over to the Benefit counter and found this tiny, compact starter brow kit that comes complete with mini tweezers, a powder brush and a precision brush; perfect for the constant traveler!

IMG_6475

Another last minute purchase. I have naturally hazel-green eyes so darker green shades actually bring out the natural color really well in sunlight. I love this convenient compact which comes complete with a cream highlighter shade, a bronze for the lid, and a forest green to line the eye.

IMG_6482As I was checking out I made the split second decision to cash in some of my Sephora rewards points for this Tarte lip and cheek stain. It’s a gorgeous light pink color that I think will be great for beach days over Summer. (No online link. Head into your nearest Sephora, it’s a recent reward).

IMG_6487Another 100 point cash in: Clinique Repairware Laser Focus. I am a big advocate of under eye cream for night and am always trying new products. This tiny tester will probably last me quite a while.

Just a few products I picked up recently. What are your favorite new beauty products? I’d love to know!

Alteration story: creating “boyfriend” jeans

IMG_6296

Equipment sweater, LOFT jeans (very old), Sam Edelman heels, Gilt + vintage necklaces

You may remember these jeans from this post. I blogged about styling boyfriend jeans and what accessories I used to make them flattering. I still love a good boyfriend jean but these particular jeans became about 2 sizes too big after some recent weight loss, and were beyond “boyfriend” style. My actual boyfriend went so far as to call them my “saggy butt jeans”… Time to get them altered I say!

photo(11)

Fun fact about these jeans is that they aren’t actually boyfriend jeans. I bought them nearly 4 years ago at LOFT and at the time they fit me snugly. Over time I have lost some weight and they became looser (like the last time I posted about them) and now just unwearable. I took them to my trusty tailor to have a few inches taken in on each side. I didn’t want to lose the slouchy nature of the jean, but wanted them to sit on my hips without falling.

As you can see above, the tailor did a fine job of making them fit my waist but now I am left with some funny fit/bunching in the croch area. The fly is a button fly and therefore inherently creates bulkiness, but by taking in the waist and not the front area, the entire pant fits fine except for the area around the front pockets. I look like a kangaroo with a pouch of sorts.

If I wear a long enough top (like this Equipment sweater which was a total splurge but I loooove it), I can kind of make these jeans work. But honestly, after 4-5 years of owning them, $10 bucks in alterations, I think its time to give them up and look for actual boyfriend jeans.

Lesson learned: try as I might, not everything can be altered to fit.
