Review: Banana Republic ponte sheath dress

Banana Republic ponte sheath dress, Cole Haan pumps

I have always made it a rule never to purchase sheath dresses. They are often boxy in nature and provide no shape or form to the pearshape body. However, during a recent BR sale I ordered this sheath to test my theory again. I knew from experience that the ponte material was stretchy, and on the model the dress looked more like a fit and flare than a true sheath. While I was right in my assessments, this dress is a total dud and I promptly sent it back.

Just for starters, the top is much too curve hugging to be work appropriate. I would have to wear a cardigan or sweater over this at all times and wouldn’t feel comfortable removing it. Also, the arm holes are incredibly wide exposing just a little too much side action for the workplace. Finally, the pleats in the front make me look so much heavier than I am… not somethin’ i’m looking for.

The one saving grace of this dress is the tush area. It is surprisingly not form fitting for those of us with some extra back there, and would be completely office appropriate.

Have you tried any BR work dresses?

  • I actually think it looks great on you. Yes, you’d have to wear a cardi or jacket (or layer it with a button down shirt; that is a cute/office-appropriate look), but I don’t think it makes you look heavy at all. The color is great too.

Thanks Allyson! I liked the color and that the length was office appropriate off the bat, and I thought about bringing up the neckline some by folding over the shoulders. But even with a discount the dress still came out to almost $100 and for that price I didn’t think it was worth it. Could be great on others though! Thanks for reading xox

  • The color of this dress is stunning and it looks fabulous on you! Such a cute work outfit!

ummm… how do you make a dress that doesn’t work for you look *amazing*? it was only when you pointed out what didn’t work for you that i noticed what you meant about it being a little too bare for work. the color is gorgeous on you. i’m getting more into navy lately.

  • The dress looks super cute with the jacket, but I agree it’d be a pain to always have to wear a jacket or cardi with it because of the arm hole situation. I think the bottom half of the dress looks great on you though! I have a similar body type as you so I’m happy I found your blog!

I actually thought you looked really thin in that outfit….quite flattering!

I can see how the top may not be work appropriate, but otherwise it looks phenomenal. Definitely not a dud at all.

Thanks for your feedback stef! I really wanted it as a work dress and because of the tight fit up top, sadly ended up returning it
